Although their origin remains a mystery, theodolites can be traced back to a 16th century mathematician named Leonard Digges and have been a fundamental surveying instrument. Theodolites measure both horizontal and vertical angles.

The theodolite of today is comprised of a mounted telescope that swivels horizontally and vertically. Exceptionally precise measurements were calculated for the development of topographical maps by surveyors aligning the compass both vertically and horizontally. This model significantly increased the accuracy of the dimensions by equipping it with telegraphic sights which assured a truer line.

The surveying theodolites used to map the National Parks of America are lovingly reproduced here in the details of this 8" (approximately) brass item. With the telescope parallel to the ground this attractive exhibit piece is about 8" tall.

Our theodolite is a unique display item. It is also a good tool for illustrating the functions of a theodolite.
